Dance has been a part of almost every culture on the globe for centuries. It is an expression of history and heritage, each traditional style of dance is unique with its own sense of style and particular movements. Many traditional dances also incorporate other objects into their performances as well. One very common item that is used on a regular basis in cultural dances world wide is the sword.
Some traditional sword dances are almost reenactments of battles that have taken place. This type of sword dance is used in several geographical locations, including: Japan, China, India, Greece, and several Middle Eastern countries. These dances are almost history lessons that have been passed down from generation to generation.
However, when many people think about sword dancing the style that comes to mind most readily are the linked sword dances that have been prevalent in Gaelic cultures, specifically. These dances, also referred to as hilt-and-point sword dances, have been performed at various times all over Europe. There are Eastern European countries that have also featured these types of dances. Romania, in particular, has a dance referred to as the Calusari, which not only focuses on the sword but also celebrates fertility and horse worship. England has also been known for hilt-and-point dances as well, commonly using the rapper and the long sword. While many of these types of dances are not commonly performed today, there are a number of dance teams that still celebrate the history of these dances and continue to perform them.
