Tap Dancing

During the 19th century America invented the art of Tap Dancing.  This form of dancing can be found throughout the world and is quite popular. There are small metal plates which are attached on the heel and toe of the dancer’s shoes. These metal plates create a tapping sound when they come into contact with a hard surface.

There were many different types of dancing which influence the creation of tap dancing, for example African movements while dancing,as well as Clog and Irish dancing to name a few.  When a tap dancer performs, they use their feet a lot like drums and tap out the rhythm and beats of the music.

Under the heading of Tap Dancers you will find different schools of study, classic tap is the most common form. This is where the tap dancer uses not only their feet, but there upper body as well to help incorporate moves from jazz or ballet into their show.  If you have ever seen the theatrical show Riverdance, then you have witnessed the second type of tap dancers - they are called “hoofers." The technique for this group of dancer’s is to use very little besides their fancy footwork to dazzle their audience, the upper portion of their body remains practically motionless as they perform.

It really doesn’t matter which method you prefer to watch, they are both beautiful and stunning when done. Whether you enjoy the hoofer style of rapid leg movements and nothing else to distract or if you desire a bit more flare with your show. You will not be disappointed if you get to watch a tap dancer perform.
